Call for Nominations to Case
Manager of the Year
|
Once again it is time to consider yourself or a
co-worker for nomination as the recipient for the DFW CMSA Case
Manager of the Year (CMOY). This prestigious award is presented at
the Spring conference being held March 15-17, 2012 in Irving, TX
If we step back and look at ourselves and at our
co-workers it is possible to see what is often overlooked? It is
the dedication, caring, and commitment to those being served under the umbrella
of case management. Recognition for excellence can be a wonderful
thank you in a role that is often forgotten when accolades are handed
out.
Take a moment and consider a nomination for
CMOY. Case management nomination criteria can be
found on the Chapter web site dfwcmsa.org, under Scholarship and
awards. Click on CMOY and a link is found that will take
you to the nomination criteria. Nomination binder presentation
must be submitted by February 22, 2012.
A show of appreciation for a case manager that provides
service day in and day out is a wonderful support to the individual, to the
community, and to the case management organization.
To submit nominations, or if you have questions, please feel
free to contact Connie Carter (wk) 972-754-0269 (cell) 817-821-4512 or crcarter8@yahoo.com.

Nominate a Case
Manager for AOSE
|
I am looking
for the next person to receive the Award of Service Excellence (AOSE). Last
year, I was nominated for this award and was thrilled to win. To be nominated
by my peers was such an honor. Also to know my peers thought I made positive
impacts to the profession that was noticeable really touched my heart. This is
the best pat on the back one can receive, and we know we do not get enough of
those.
Please
nominate someone that is a leader and an innovator to case management. Give
that pat on the back to those who deserve the recognition. Please go to
www.dfwcmsa.org and review the criteria for AOSE under Scholarship and Awards.
Nomination binder is due by February 22, 2012.
To submit
nominations, or if you have any questions, please call Tracy Pizzi at cell (682)
365-3452 or email at tcpizzi@1scom.net.

If you are still
undecided about joining your colleagues at the Annual DFW CMSA Conference in
March, let me help you make up your mind by sharing with you the following
highlights of just three of the speakers we have scheduled this year.
Bobby Henline, one
of the General Session speakers, is a veteran of Desert Storm and an American
hero who spreads joy and hope through his love of stand-up comedy. Deployed to
Iraq three times with the 82nd Airborne Division and the 3rd Armored Calvary
regiment, his Humvee was hit by a roadside bomb, just north of Baghdad in April
2007. Of the five men in the vehicle, Bobby was the only survivor. Over 38% of
his body was burned and his head was burned to the skull. Bobby spent six months
in the hospital fighting for his life, and within two years his left hand had to
be amputated. To date he has had over 40 surgeries. Bobby is one of those rare
people you meet in life that at once
makes you laugh
hysterically and simultaneously reminds you to be a better person. His use of
laughter speaks volumes to the strength of one man's survival against events
that could have easily provoked bitterness.
Hanna Ulatowska,
Ph.D. is one of the breakout session speakers. As a Holocaust survivor herself
& in working with other survivors, Dr. Ulatowska recognized the power of a
narrative coherence when life had been disrupted by war trauma. She translated
this knowledge to the development of a therapeutic tool currently utilized in
stroke patients. Dr Ulatowska's presentation is based on the investigations of
narratives of stroke patients conducted at the University of Texas at Dallas,
and testimonies of American veterans in Dallas, as well as Holocaust survivors
of Auschwitz collected in Poland. Acceptance of loss and rebuilding one's
biography will be discussed.
Isador Lieberman,
MD, MBA, FRCSC will be presenting a breakout session on robotic assisted spinal
deformity surgery. Robotic assistance provides the surgeon with a tool to more
precisely and efficiently implant screws in patients undergoing spinal deformity
surgery. With the recent introduction of this technology into spine surgery, the
promise of robotics is poised to positively affect the health and quality of
life of many more patients.
I'll see You in Irving
at the 20th Annual DFW CMSA Conference, March 15-17, 2012.

Notes From the President
Elect
|
|
|
Kathleen Law, RN,
CCM
IT IS
ELECTION TIME AT DFW CMSA!!
This is the time for
all members to step up and join the Chapter Officers and Board of
Directors!!
We all are
busy with work, family, extracurricular activities and we don't think we have
the time to take on another task. BUT YOU
CAN!!! Being part of the decision- making process for our Chapter is
an exciting thing to do. Just ask Janet Land ~~ and read her article in this
Newsletter.
We enjoy our monthly
dinner meetings, seeing old friends and meeting new ones; hearing interesting
speakers discuss timely topics; and just being with other Case Managers.
However, your Membership obligations should not end there. It is very easy to
"let someone else do the work," and just sit by and schmoose with your
friends. But it should be a part of your obligation as a member of DFW CMSA to
join in the process of making the Chapter work better. The best way to do that
is to run for office.
I have talked about
running for BOD and Officer positions in prior Newsletter articles, but this
time I am asking you to become an active part of your Chapter. It
is not a time-consuming task: the Board meets approximately 5
times a year (every other month, on the average) and the meetings generally do
not last more than 2 hours. We abide by Robert's Rules of Order to keep the
meetings on track and we do our best to make sure that all Board and Officers
have the opportunity to contribute their opinions upon every topic.
You can read more
about the BOD or Chapter Officer positions by going to www.dfwcmsa.org and clicking on Members Only. You
can also contact me if you have any questions or would like to discuss a
position.
I STRONGLY URGE you
to fill out the Consent to Serve Statement
and join us for the 2012-2013 Chapter year. It is very easy to access the
form: just use the link in this Newsletter. Download the form, complete it and
send it to me at lenandkath611@gmail.com.
Good Luck in the
election, and I will see you at the Dinner Meeting on February
21st.

Your Key To A
Discount Conference Registration!
The
20th Annual DFW CMSA Conference is coming up fast. Mark
your calendars for March 15-17. The speaker roster is fantastic
this year with nationally recognized experts presenting a variety of timely
topics that affect the everyday practice of case management. And
if you want to attend but have a limited educational budget, here's your
answer!
Track Hosts are
offered a 25% discount on conference registration. That's a huge
savings over the regular registration fees. The responsibilities
are minimal and you get to enjoy the entire conference for only one day acting
as a Track Host. So what's the catch? There isn't
one. Here's the scoop:
· Track Hosts are
assigned to one set of speaker presentations for one day of the
conference.
· Responsibilities
include speaker introduction (from a prepared script) and pre-session
announcements (evaluation completion, turning off cell phones, etc).
· Calling on the audio
visual team for assistance should there be issues with the projector.
· Presenting speaker
gifts following the presentation. That's pretty much it. Anyone
interested in learning more about being a Track Host and receiving a discounted
registration fee should contact me for a complete list of
responsibilities. Being a Track Host is a great way to attend the
conference within your budget while also giving back to the Chapter that is
sponsoring this wonderful event.

there are a limited number of Track Host spots and you don't want to miss this
tremendous opportunity. Do it today!

for Membership Secretary and Recording Secretary
- A three (3) year commitment
for Board positions and President (President-elect one year, President one year

registration to Chapter sponsored events (not including monthly dinner meetings)
- FREE

- Leadership skills that
support resume experience
- And whatever
YOU choose to make of the experience!
Please contact Kathleen Law (see
her column) or any of the current Officers and Board Members to discuss any
questions you may have about BOD positions. Don't forget that as members of the
DFW Chapter you also have access to the Members Only section on the
dfwcmsa.org website. Here you can access even more information on

| Meet the Board |
|
Janet
Land, RN, BSN, CCM, CPDM
As a life-long
nurse, well, let's just say that I was working in hospitals back when you could
still smoke in the Nurses Lounge during your break, and a case manager since
1995, I have a varied history both in nursing and case management. I obtained
my BSN from Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky back in 1980. [I also
got married in 1980, but that didn't work out quite as well as the nursing
career.] Other than a brief stint while I attended law school and practiced
law for a few short years, my life has been devoted to nursing.
My clinical background
includes intensive care, neurological intensive care, post-anesthesia recovery
care, medical floor nursing, surgical floor nursing, and even burn care. My
case management experience has been mostly disability management; i.e., Workers
Compensation, Short-Term Disability and Long-Term Disability, with a brief two
years working health care case management, but I dealt mostly with system
training. [I did learn all about Milliman but not InterQual.] I became
certified in case management in 1997 before I moved to Texas later that same
year.
I have been a member of DFW
CMSA, off-and-on like many of you, for years now. I was sure that I would get
more out of my membership if I became more involved, but wasn't sure I had the
time to devote to the organization. Last year, I took the plunge and ran for
the Board of Directors. Fortunately, I was elected - but it was close. [Maybe
I should have voted for myself.] I have really enjoyed the brief time I have
served on the Board. I have learned a great deal about case management in
general, the dynamics of this chapter specifically, and how case management fits
into the larger picture of health care overall.
I know that all of you don't
have the time or the desire to serve on the Board of Directors. But I do
encourage you to seek out opportunities to get more involved with the DFW CMSA
chapter; perhaps membership on one of the several committees would suit you
better. As always, we welcome ideas and suggestions to adapt our dinner
meetings to meet your goals if possible. Your feedback on the evaluation forms
is really invaluable, and it is not only read, but gathered and tracked to help
us decide what direction to take when setting future goals for the
chapter.
I appreciate your support and
the opportunity to serve on your Board of Directors and invite you to join
me.
